| Biotechnology
has become one of the most heavily-invested industries in the United States, with
U.S. health-care biotech revenues increasing from $8 billion in 1992 to $50.7
billion in 2005 -- and it's growing larger: In the third quarter of 2007 alone,
the life sciences sector, combining biotechnology and medical devices, reported
venture capital investments of $1.9 billion going into 175 deals, with biotech
having $1.1 billion going into 99 deals, while medical devices had $825 million
going into 76 deals.
Realizing the tremendous impact of this industry
for the 21st century, regions across the country have exponentially increased
the number of biotechnology companies, academic centers, state and local associations
and related enterprises within their areas. Specifically, three regions are acknowledged
as world leaders in the biotechnology industry: the San Francisco Bay Area, cities
and states within the New England region and the state of North Carolina. Due
to these regions' escalating amount of information, transactions, groundbreaking
discoveries and more, the Biotech Review Network was established to help provide
a free daily review of the news regarding biotech-related organizations within
each of these areas.
